IT WAS first thought to be a bomb that forced the closure of a busy road.

But officials are now saying the "unexploded ordnance was not as first thought".

Military Road in Gosport was closed to traffic and pedestrians after the discovery at HMS Sultan, the Naval base.

The Royal Navy EOD attended and established the suspected unexploded ordnance in fact not an explosive.

Officers from Hampshire Constabulary were called to HMS Sultan in Gosport at 9.29am on Friday (October 22).

Military Road was closed from The Cocked Hat to Station Road while emergency services dealt with the incident.

ROMANSE, Hampshire County Council's traffic service, showed heavy traffic in the area.

The road has since reopened.
