A NEW business will move into a vacant building in Winchester High Street, in plans are given the go-ahead.

Nick Hanson, of Moorside Cafe Management Ltd, based in Winnall, has lodged an application to make changes to 43 High Street. The unit was previously occupied by the West Cornwall Pasty Company which shut down earlier this year.

If approved, the Grade II listed building would become a café and bakery, named Winchester Bakery.

The proposals include the replacement of the ground floor shop fittings, along with refurbishment of the building including the removal of three unauthorised 21st century timber posts on the first floor and the repair and conservation of a 16th – 17th century wall painting by a conservator.

The application states: “The proposal has embraced a sensitive conservation approach to the proposals which incorporate a very stylish contemporary shop floor fit out that will provide an uplift to a rather tired looking interior.

“There are a number of heritage benefits from the scheme which includes the removal of unauthorised works, the Conservation of the 16th Century wall paint and the general improvements to the historic fabric of the building.

“The proposed external works will also seek to improve the special character of the Conservation Area whilst also being sympathetic to the listed building and the neighbouring properties.

“The proposal will allow this vacant retail unit to be brought back into a viable use consistent with its conservation, whilst also creating a number of jobs for local people, ultimately resulting in a positive contribution to both the local character and economy.”

The proposal also states that the signage will be replaced with a new hand painted sign and the colour scheme of the front façade and shopfront will be changed. A separate application has been submitted to replace the existing air conditioning system and condenser.

It has also applied for a pavement licence for folding tables and chairs and a moveable planter between 8am and 6pm Monday to Sunday.
