Marlands Shopping Centre had been open for less than a year when models used the escalator as an automatic catwalk.
The charity fashion show was staged by Southampton Technical College to raise money for Shelter, a fund for the homeless.
Shops in the centre provided the clothes, student hairdressers and makeup artists applied the finer effects, and student technicians organised the recording of a promotional video of the event.
The student models underwent weeks of rigorous training to learn how to walk, smile, glare and get noticed.
As the seats filled on March 22, 1992, the months of hard work paid off.
Because few of the pages were printed in colour at that time, some of the pictures were captured on black and white film.
