SOUTHAMPTON carnival wasn't as large in 1988 as it was most years, but not because of the weather or poor turnout – because of an admin error.
The carnival was of its usual high standard that year, but there was something missing from the city centre party. Enough floats.
Due to a mistake in the application process, many of the entry forms weren't sent out.
The sun blazed down, the collection tins rattled and flag-waving crowds lined the streets as the 1988 Southampton carnival parade got underway on July 7.
Among the unusual floats was a swan created by staff from Southampton Hospitals and the University, complete with a moving neck made from a section of drainpipe and rope.
