I HAD never felt so anxious to eat a fillet of fried chicken in my life.

After flicking through Tripadvisor to find the next victim of my weekly food review, I realised something.

I'm always treating myself – going somewhere slightly unusual that is guaranteed to be a good time.

So this week, I wanted to do quite the opposite. And that is how I found myself in the drive-thru of Millbrook Roundabout KFC...

It is the worst-rated KFC in the whole of Southampton, and while many people are probably thinking I have too much time on my hands, I thought it'd be interesting to try it out.

Now, commend me for my bravery here, because the reviews are pretty dire and the restaurant has an overall rating of 1.5 out of 5.

These are the types of reviews that were swirling round my head as I awaited my dinner:

  • "Chicken dried out, over cooked, I had to throw it in the bin. I will never go there again."
  • "The chips were the worst chips I’ve ever eaten."
  • "A big disappointment and left us all quite queasy."

But, believe it or not, I was pleasantly surprised by my experience.

I was greeted by a friendly young lady who took my order, assisted me with further information as I don't often eat at KFC, and took payment with a smile on her face.

The same level of service was replicated at the second window, and lo and behold, the box, bag and food was warm. As in, perfect temperature!

After fighting through afternoon traffic, I got the food home and cracked it open. Everything was present, which isn't usually the case from my local branch... not naming names.

There's not an awful lot more I can say, but the food was good. It was KFC, and about as much as you can expect from a fast food place, but good.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet, and it is a good idea to try something yourself rather than relying solely on Tripadvisor reviews.
