PLANNING chiefs are studying a proposal to provide a Southampton school with a new unit for hearing-impaired pupils.

Consent is being sought to build a single-storey extension to Newlands Primary School, which was rebuilt by the city council in 2012/13.

The proposed addition to the junior classroom wing will cater for 14 children at the school in Windermere Avenue, Millbrook.

A design and access statement that forms part of the application says the scheme comprises two classrooms and a range of other facilities, including a therapy room.

It adds: "The pupils are currently attending Newlands Primary School and will be using temporary accommodation until the new unit is complete.

"It was important for the school that the children will feel included and part of the main school. For that reason a stand alone building was discounted as an option.

"It was felt the extension to the junior wing would have less impact on the playing field.

"It is also the 'quieter' wing of the school, as the infant wing has additional hard play areas for nursery and reception children, which it was felt could adversely impact the unit in terms of sound mitigation.

"The proposed extension extends towards the south east corner of the sports pitches and cuts across a path that provides access around the main buildings. A path is therefore to be provided around the extension to maintain pedestrian flow."

The scheme is outlined in a public notice published by the city council, which will determine the application.
