WORK is set to start on the installation of a new 24-hour gym in Southampton.

The first floor above the Sainsbury’s store on Portswood Road is set to be turned into a new Pure Gym venue after plans were approved by civic chiefs.

The site had originally been earmarked for a community space, but according to a document published by Southampton City Council (SCC) it has never been occupied for community use.

The proposals were submitted back in July 2019 and concerns were raised regarding the potential loss of a community space and the impact the new facility would have on noise and traffic.

The plans were branded controversial after a number of objections from local residents.

Many of them objected to the scheme, fearing that the 24-hour use will set a precedent for other businesses in the area to apply for later closing hours.

Among the concerns raised there are also the potential loss of a community space and the impact the new facility would have on noise and traffic.

Following an inspection from the Environmental Health Officer, it was discovered that there will be objection to the noise impact of the units.

The applicant has agreed to mount the units on anti-vibration pads to further minimise disturbance. The proposal will therefore "not adversely affect the amenity of the neighbouring occupiers", a statement said.

Planning bosses said the new gym would bring “significant positive socio-economic benefits to the local community and economy".

The statement reads: "In conclusion, the proposal is judged to have an acceptable impact in accordance with the relevant guidance and policies and therefore can be supported."

It is not yet known when the gym will officially open.
