ART Asia is to celebrate 40 years of promoting South Asian culture across the South with a day of celebration on Sunday.

The Southampton based arts organisation will be marking the milestone at MAST Mayflower Studios on Sunday.

The evening showcase, which starts at 5pm, will see live performances by some of Art Asia’s most loved performers including live music and dance from Sanju Sahai, Vidya Thirunarayan, Pooja Angra, Rakhi Sood and Bollywood Songs presented by Dynamix Band.

Delicious vegetarian food will be served by Sanjha at the interval as part of the ticket price.

Before the performances, audiences of ages and abilities are invited to experience free music and dance performances including Bollywood, Bhangra, Kathak, and Bharatnatyam, alongside workshops in Arts, Craft and Rangoli throughout the afternoon at MAST Studios from 12:30pm - 4pm.

The following night, Art Asia partners with City of Culture 2025 to bring world famous virtuoso Zakir Hussain to the stage.

Art Asia is widely known for the popular Southampton Mela Festival - a free festival full of a range of musical styles, dances and family fun activities celebrating South Asian culture. Over the years it has attracted more than 30,000 people and is one of the most diverse festivals in the region offering arts activities to watch, enjoy and create.

Over the last four decades, Art Asia has also brought a whole host of world renowned musicians and singers to Southampton.

Dahlia Jamil, Chief Executive at Art Asia, told the Daily Echo: “Throughout our history we have risen to many challenges, and as a thriving organisation we continue to learn and explore. Even throughout the pandemic, our work aspires to be entertaining, surprising and to celebrate our belief that the Arts of South Asia are universal in their appeal.”

The last two Mela festivals have taken place online.
