DELAYS are reported to be easing on the M27 following a two-vehicle accident that blocked two lanes during rush-hour.

Huge queues built up on the motorway following the collision, which occurred on the westbound carriageway between junctions 5 and 4 near Southampton Airport.

Drivers were left facing one-hour delays caused by seven miles of congestion following the crash.

All lanes have now reopened and traffic is reported to be flowing again.

But motorists are facing problems on another section of the M27. One lane of the eastbound carriageway is bloccked by a broken down vehicle at junction 11/A27 Fareham. Delays are reported to be building.

No-one is thought to have been injured in the earlier incident.

Following the crash the travel service Romanse tweeted: "#M27 Westbound - 2 lanes BLOCKED between J5/A335 #Eastleigh and J4/#M3 due to a multi-vehicle RTI, heavy delays already."

A later tweet said: "#M27 Westbound - 2 lanes remain BLOCKED between J5/A335 #Eastleigh and J4/#M3 due to a multi-vehicle RTI, heavy delays off approx 50-minutes backed to J8/A3024 #Bursledon."

Romanse later reported that only one lane remained blocked but the incident was causing 60-minute delays, with queues stretching as far back as junction 9 at Park Gate.

A police spokesperson said: "We were called at 7.39am to a report of a collision involving two vehicles. Two lanes were blocked but the road has since been cleared. No injuries were reported."

Romanse also reported 25-minute delays in the Botley and Hedge End area.

Problems started to occur eastbound on Grange Rd, Broad Oak, High Street and Mill Hill between Barton Drrive and the A3051.
