SOUTHAMPTON is suffering from a rapid spike in Covid cases – with numbers doubling in five areas.

Just two weeks ago, Government data showed that most of the city was recovering and cases were on the decline.

But in the seven days to November 16, the latest data available, 25 of the 31 city districts reported an increase when compared to the week before.

One reported no change, and the remaining five saw a decline.

Cases doubled (or more than doubled) in: Bitterne South, 48 cases, up 29 or 152.6%; Itchen, 53 cases, up 27 or 103.8%; Maybush, 53 cases, up 27 or 100%; St Denys, 32 cases, up 16, or 100%; and Swaythling, 34 cases, up 17 or 100%.

Both Hightown and Weston now have a case rate higher than 800 per 100,000 people, meaning they are in the worst category possible.
