A DOCK worker who died after a collision with a lorry near a Southampton dock gate has been named, as an inquest opens into his death.

Police were called at 6.07am on November 11 after a serious crash between a cyclist and a lorry on Western Avenue in Millbrook. Dock Gate 20 was closed while emergency services dealt with the incident.

The cyclist, Lee Early, of Marlhill Close, Southampton, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the collision.

An inquest has now been opened into his death by area coroner Jason Pegg at Winchester Coroner’s Court.

Mr Pegg said: “Mr Early was cycling to work from his home address when he collided with a heavy goods vehicle.”

The hearing was told that Mr Early was identified by a police officer by comparison with a tattoo he had.

A post mortem has been carried out by pathologist Dr Vipul Foria and the cause of death has been given as severe head injury.

Mr Pegg adjourned the hearing for a review to take place on May 30, next year, as police are currently investigating the incident.

An obituary to Mr Early published in the Daily Echo said: “Dock Worker Legend - Tragically taken away on 11th November 2021. Rest in peace bro/uncle. They say there is no reason They say that time will heal But neither time or reason Will change the way we feel Reunited with his beloved Mum & Dad. Until we meet again [sic].”

A 28-year-old man from Dudley was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
