TWO Chinese takeaways in Southampton have been slammed following a hygiene inspection.

Both China Wang and Shanghai Garden were given a one out of five in their respective reports.

The takeaway establishments, which are both located at Premier Parade, Forest Hills Drive, require major improvement.

At China Wang, food was not being stored at a sufficient temperature, with “lots of food” stored in plastic bowls at ambient in the kitchen, the takeaway was using damaged containers, and the premises’ doors were “dirty/black.”

The report reads: “A thorough clean of the whole premises is required. The doors were dirty/back particularly on the leading edge, there was a lot of food debris on the cooker tray beneath the burners and the floor was dirty, particularly beneath and behind the equipment, and at the floor/wall junction.

“The handles to equipment and the light switches were dirty and greasy. This indicates poor hand washing and poor cleaning standards and increases the potential for cross contamination.”

Staff have been told to write a cleaning schedule to ensure all part of the premises and equipment are cleaned at the appropriate frequencies.

The report goes on to state that China Wang requires lots of repair work, including renewing missing wall tiles and damaged equipment.

Next door to China Wang at 4 Premier Parade, Forest Hills Drive is Shanghai Garden, which was also awarded a one-star rating.

Foods in carrier bags were being stored in the WC lobby, some of the cooked items in the refrigerator were in contact with foods in a container below, and it was “apparent” that food hygiene and safety knowledge amongst staff was “limited.”

The report continues: “The walls throughout the kitchen need a thorough clean to remove a build-up of grease particularly at a high level, in the corners and around and behind the pipework.

“The WC pan was dirty, and the inside of the refrigerator was dirty with food debris. The supports/legs and shelves to the tables/counters were dirty/black with engrained dirt and grease and had not been cleaned for a considerable period of time.”

According to the report, the handles to equipment and light switches were dirty; indicating poor cleaning and poor handwashing.

Serving scoops were also encrusted with food debris.

Both establishments were assessed on October 18.
