HIGHWAYS teams across Hampshire are on high alert this weekend as a wind warning has been issued for the area.

The warning from the Met Office has advised that strong winds will hit the county as Storm Arwen blows in.

It lasts from midnight to 6pm tomorrow. There is also a chance of some sleet or snow in the county on Saturday morning but this is expected to clear quickly.

Hampshire County Council has now said that it has its dedicated fleet of 43 winter vehicles on standby.

Councillor Russell Oppenheimer, Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Highways Operations, said: “Storm Arwen could bring gusts of wind up to 55mph in some areas of the county this weekend.

“I would ask that anyone setting out on a journey over the next couple of days to check the weather forecast before they head off and consider if their journey is absolutely necessary. If they must travel, please be prepared and drive according to the conditions."
