NO cases of the new Covid Omicron variant have been identified in Southampton so far, it has been confirmed.

Dr Debbie Chase, the director of public health at Southampton City Council, said the authority is not aware of any cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in the city.

But residents have been asked to wear face masks and get vaccinated amid warnings that the pandemic is not yet over.

A heavily mutated Covid variant called Omicron and labelled a “variant of concern” has been identified in the past week.

Six cases of the Omicron variant have been identified in Scotland, four in  Lanarkshire and two in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

Dr Chase said: “We are not aware of any cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 in Southampton.

“While there is no cause for alarm, we are right to be cautious and the emergence of this variant is a reminder for us all that the pandemic is not over and that everyone has a role to play in helping to keep themselves, their loved ones and their communities safe.”

Earlier today government advisers said Covid booster jabs should be offered to all over-18s in a bid to stop a potential new wave.

A total of 1,182 people in Southampton tested positive to Covid in the past seven days.

This is a 10% decrease when compared with the previous week.

Face coverings will become mandatory on public transport and in shops in England from tomorrow.

The move is part of the measures to target the Omicron variant.
