SOUTHAMPTON residents are calling for speeding bumps to be installed after a car flipped and smashed into other cars.

Shirley residents have described the shocking moment the incident happened on Thursday evening, which saw emergency services race to Church Street at around 6.20pm.

Two men, aged 28 and 35, were later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and stealing from a motor vehicle.

Anne Hall, who has lived in the Shirley area for the last 12 years, said she heard a “loud bang”.

She added: “I was in the kitchen when I heard a loud bang. I came out to see what was happening and saw the emergency staff were right outside my door, helping two men.

“Just 5 minutes before the accident happened, kids were walking to scout-related activities.

“Think about what might have happened if the incident had occurred 5 minutes later. God only knows.”

“There is a park further down the road where all the kids play, and then some of them walk home from school.”

In light of the crash, Anne is now calling for Southampton City Council to take action and install safety measures to prevent further incidents from happening.

The 40-year-old added: “So, for their safety too, the council needs to add more speed bumps to slow the traffic down,” said Anne.

In response, deputy leader of the council, Jeremy Moulton, said: “It’s upsetting to learn of this incident and we are pleased to hear that no one has been seriously hurt.

“However, we understand residents’ more general concerns about traffic speeds. To address this, the majority of Church Street and other surrounding streets already feature a range of traffic calming measures. We would encourage residents to share their views on other prospective interventions via our new 20mph request process. This allows communities to request 20mph speed limits and other potential traffic calming measures in their local areas before the deadline of 4 January 2022.

According to police, the 28-year-old man has been released under investigation.

Meanwhile, the 35-year-old man will face no further action.
