SOUTHAMPTON'S skyline is set to change in 2022.

This year, some huge planning applications have been submitted to Southampton City Council.

From hundreds of new homes, flat blocks and schools, the skyline is set to change.

Even some of the city's most iconic structures are a risk of demolition.

Here's some of the biggest planning applications submitted in 2021:

 

LEISURE WORLD: Plans for 650 homes, hotels, restaurants, casino and cinema approved

MULTI-MILLION pound plans to transform the Leisure World site in Southampton have been given the green light.

Existing buildings at the site off West Quay Road are set to be demolished to make way for 650 homes, two 150-room hotels, 80 serviced hotel apartments, new restaurants, offices, a cinema and a casino.

It comes as councillors backed the £250m scheme after a two-hour long discussion tonight.

The project is expected to create 1,000 new jobs and work could start as early as 2022.

Updated plans for £200m Toys R Us revamp unveiled (now with 600 homes, shops and a hotel)

UPDATED plans for the £200m redevelopment of a derelict site in Southampton have been unveiled.

A total of 600 new homes, 65,000 sq ft of office space as well as shops and 170 parking spaces could be built at the former Toys R Us site off Western Esplanade.

The initial proposals for 275 flats, restaurants , shops and cafes have been revised.

The new plans also include proposals for 23,000 sq ft of shops, 480 cycle spaces and 48,000 sq ft of hotel or office space.

The so-called Maritime Promenade, a new pedestrian link between Southampton Central railway station and Harbour Parade, is also set to be part of the final plans.

If approved, the scheme could be completed by 2026 creating a total of 590 full-time jobs over the coming years.

Debenhams building could be torn down to make way for up to 600 new homes

MULTI-MILLION pound plans to redevelop the Debenhams site in Southampton have been unveiled.

The Debenhams building in Queensway could be demolished to make way for approximately 600 new homes in a move expected to create 250 jobs.

Developers said options to retain and re-use the existing building, with a retail or other commercial use, “were costed and considered but were not viable”.

AN ICONIC Southampton structure that has stood over the city for more than five decades could be demolished.

Plans have been submitted to Southampton City Council proposing to demolish the former gas works on Britannia Road.

The two enormous gas holders in St Mary’s are a familiar site to thousands of Saints fans as they head to the stadium.

The plans were submitted by gas company SGN and contain details regarding the dewatering, desludging and ultimately the dismantling of the existing "redundant" column-guided gasholder and spiral-guided gasholder.

Both structures are listed and therefore are protected.

WORK to completely transform part of Southampton city centre is now underway.

Funding for Bargate Quarter, the £132m scheme to improve the development built around the City Walls and The Bargate, has been completed.

It will provide 519 much-needed new homes comprising a mix of studio, one, two and three-bed units, along with 2,515 square metres of ground floor commercial space.

Construction is now underway following a unanimous decision by Southampton City Council’s Planning and Rights of Way Panel to grant permission for the revised scheme earlier this year.

Plans revealed for new £17m Southampton school building on unused land

AN UNUSED area of land could be transformed to create a new £17m school building in the centre of Southampton.

If approved, the plans would see part of the currently unused area of council-owned land at the corner of Lime Street and Evans Street become the site of a two form entry Free School.

Hope Community School is currently a one form entry school operating opposite the site in what is described as an ‘inappropriate facility’.

The press and public were excluded from the meeting that was held in September.
