PLANNING chiefs are studying an application to transform a seaside pub near one of Hampshire's most historic buildings.

Owner Chris Cecil-Wright is seeking consent to make a raft of improvements to the Gun Inn, which overlooks a small harbour just along the coast from Hurst Castle.

Proposals include a single-storey addition to the pub in Keyhaven Road, Keyhaven, and the removal of existing extensions built in the past 40 years.

The application cites the need to ensure the pub’s long-term viability, adding: "This is especially important considering the responsibility of preserving such a valuable heritage asset in a sensitive location."

Some of the existing extensions will be demolished to "restore the essence" of the original building.

A new restaurant designed around a glazed courtyard will include smaller dining areas that aim to create a more intimate experience.

The application says: "For the first time in many years the Gun Inn has returned to private ownership, rather than existing as an item on a major brewery’s balance sheet.

"Over the past nine months the management have struggled to meet existing demand due to size and operational constraints.

"It is very important to ensure the pub can cope with customer demand. This involves ensuring the kitchens, bars, and other operational spaces are designed efficiently."

Part of the Grade II-listed building is thought to date from the 17th century.

The application says: "Since 1978 the pub has become victim of unsympathetic alterations. The design seeks to remove these newer alterations and restore the essence of the original courtyard/house layout."

The proposed development is outlined in a public notice published by the New Forest National Part Authority, which will decide the application.
