A record number of students at a town college have taken on a senior maths challenge this year.

Over 200 students from Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh took on the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Maths Challenge.

Of those who sat the Challenge, 18 achieved a Gold Certificate, 44 achieved a Silver Certificate, and 59 achieved a Bronze Certificate.

Three students, Shaun Walker, formerly of Swanmore College; Ashraf Alam, formerly of Cantell School; and Jacob Clements, formerly of The Westgate School, got such good results that they were amongst the best in the country and therefore qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad.

Barton Peveril’s Director of Mathematics and Computer Science, Kyle Evans, said: "The Barton Peveril Mathematics and Computer Science Department is delighted that over 200 students signed up for the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge.

"We had a large number of Gold Awards – including many first year students – and three students qualified for the British Maths Olympiad: Shaun Walker, Ashraf Alam and Jacob Clements.

"In the past we have had students reach the upper stages of the Olympiad and even qualify for the UK Team that enters the International Maths Olympiad; we have every hope that these three may be the next in line."
