TRAFFIC bosses could ban daytime parking in six roads in a bid to end a row between residents and students.

Councillors were today due to discuss ways of solving problems in the streets around Peter Symonds College in Winchester.

Proposals include bringing in rules meaning there would be no parking in Vernham Road, St Matthews Road, Wessex Drive, St Stephens Road, Kynegils Road and Lynch Close between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Saturday.

But some residents feel it is not enough - and the proposed measures will simply push the problem further into Weeke.

Former city councillor Len Humpage, of Kynegils Road, said: "The council knows the college is causing the problem. These new restrictions will just move the problem 100 yards up the road. These cars are clogging up road entrances, potentially hampering the emergency services and parking across people's drives so they can't get in or out."

The campaigners say other solutions, such as finding a site for a car park should be considered.

The council has asked residents to fill out a questionnaire, giving their preferred option. It received 65 replies, mostly calling for restrictions 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday.

The college now has 2,820 students and at a public meeting on the issue last November bursar Paul Warren agreed that parking was a "massive problem" and that he wanted to find a solution.

In a letter to residents accompanying the questionnaire, city council traffic engineer, Neville Crisp, said the authority still wanted to go through with the restrictions as proposed.

He said bringing in 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, would cause "significant enforcement problems" for the council, as it would mean adjacent streets having single yellow lines with different restrictions.

The principal of Peter Symonds College, Neil Hopkins, in a brief statement, said: "We make it very clear to prospective students in our prospectus that they should not expect to be able to drive to college when they have passed their test."
