Southampton's bid to become the next UK City of Culture has received the backing of Hampshire Cricket.

Southampton 2025, the team behind the bid announced has announced that it is partnering with the club and The Ageas Bowl.

The new partnership is set to see the team receive the backing of the club and venue which has been officially named as a City Partner.

The partnership will aim to strengthen the opportunity to showcase all areas of culture including the city’s strong sporting heritage.

David Mann, Hampshire Cricket & The Ageas Bowl Chief Executive said: “We are delighted to partner with Southampton UK City of Culture 2025 and offer our full backing to this hugely exciting bid.

“We’re proud to support Southampton’s bid in promoting the city’s hugely successful sporting credentials.

"Sport is a key part of the city’s cultural make up and we are looking forward to continue helping put Southampton and Hampshire on the map with our hugely anticipated domestic and international matches in 2022 and beyond.”

Alumni from the club have already shown their support, with Charlotte Edwards CBE committing to supporting the city through her role as Southampton 2025 Ambassador.

“The UK City of Culture team are so excited to have Hampshire Cricket and The Ageas Bowl onboard as a City Partner, and we are keen to work closely together in 2022 to promote the benefits that winning UK City of Culture will bring to the city and beyond."
