MOTORISTS have been urged to remain patient while roadworks are carried out on one of the main routes out of Southampton.

Traffic was left queuing as the result of narrow lanes over the Redbridge flyover which was reduced to one lane at times throughout today.

Tailbacks stretched back into the city while engineers carried out planned repairs on the flyover.

The work has been ongoing since November and is on course to finish as planned in March.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire County Council, which is overseeing the work, said the roadworks were part of a planned maintenance programme on the parapets to improve safety for motorists.

Overnight closures are also planned in the future.
