AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a Southampton man after he suffered third degree burns.

David John Parnell, of Bursledon Road, presented to the emergency department at Southampton General Hospital with collapse and third degree burns on the right side of the chest wall due to a long lie against a radiator.

During his stay in hospital, it was deemed that the 90-year-old would not survive a transfer to the burn’s unit at Salisbury Hospital. Mr Parnell was put on end-of-life care, and he died in hospital on December 23.

An inquest has now been opened into his death by senior coroner Christopher Wilkinson at Winchester Coroner’s Court.

A post mortem was carried out and a cause of death was given as pulmonary embolism and sepsis, urinary tract infection, hypertension, atrial fibrillation, burns, and upper gastrointestinal erosions.

Mr Wilkinson adjourned the hearing for a full inquest to take place on August 16.
