More than 100 people are expected to gather outside Southampton Civic Centre today to celebrate Indian Republic Day.

Wednesday's event marks the 73rd anniversary of the country's adoption of a Constitution. It is organised by One Community Hampshire and Dorset (OCHD) and will take place from 10.30am until 11.30am

Festivities will include a flag-raising ceremony followed by the singing of the national anthem. The local South Asian communities will also present Bollywood dance and singing performances.

Founder of OCHD Pritheepal Singh said: " The 75th Anniversary represents a unique bond of friendship between the peoples of the UK and India for all members and generations of our Southampton Indian community and diaspora, as well as further recognition of the strength and contribution it brings to the diversity of the entire Southampton community, from multiculturalism to civic society, the voluntary sector, and business.

"It will be a fantastic and colourful event and I hope our people can come together and do something for the community."

Children and adults will wear traditional Indian attire, such as Sari's or Salwar Kameez and will be carrying National flags and banners to show support for their country.

Republic Day in India is celebrated each year on January 26. The day marks India's transition into a fully independent republic, having previously been governed by the United Kingdom. While India gained independence from England in 1947, it wasn't until January 26, 1950, that the Indian Constitution came into effect.
