RESIDENTS have been warned after a number of reports of doorstep cold calling in the New Forest.

Police in Holbury say they have received multiple reports of a suspicious male knocking on doors and offering to clean gutters.

It is said that the individual has then been taking payment for the work but not returning or completing it as agreed.

He has been described as a white male, scruffy looking, wearing a woollen hat and has a distinct broken nose.

A police spokesperson said on Facebook: "We are actively investigating the incidents but would like members of the public to share the following advice with any neighbours who may be elderly, vulnerable or likely to fall victim to these types of scams.

"Always put the door chain on when answering the door, if you do not know the caller or feel unsure, do not open the door. You can always speak to them through the front window.

"Never employ cold-calling doorstep traders or engage with cold callers on the phone. The Buy with Confidence Scheme has a list of companies verified by Trading Standards.

"Always keep front and back doors locked.
