THREE men were arrested on Saturday when Saints faced Coventry in the FA Cup.

A senior Hampshire Constabulary officer has thanked "the vast majority of fans" for their compliance with the rules.

But two men from Coventry were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, and another man was arrested on suspicion of throwing a bottle during the game.

Chief Inspector Mark Lewis said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of fans who attended the match to support their team responsibly.

“I’d also like to express my thanks to all Saints fans for their co-operation after the match, as we had to close Britannia Road to facilitate the safe departure and movement of all those in attendance.

“Unfortunately there was a very small minority whose behaviour fell below what was expected, and we had to take action. Three arrests were made at the ground.

“We will continue to assess each fixture on a game-by-game basis and work with the club so that fans can enjoy watching their team safely.”

The men from Coventry, aged 40 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of common assault of an emergency worker, and on suspicion of assault by beating of an emergency worker respectively.

Both received a conditional caution.

A 50-year-old man from East Sussex was arrested on suspicion of an offence under the Football (Offences) Act 1991, following a report that a bottle had been thrown during the game.

He has been released under investigation and enquiries are ongoing.
