WORK is set to begin at last on a multi-million pound plan to transform a Hampshire town centre.

The long-awaited scheme for Totton includes improvements to Rumbridge Street, where engineers will resurface the carriageway, improve the lighting and install new seating.

Work was due to have started last year but was delayed by the discovery of a collapsed sewer system.

Repairs have now been carried out and the proposed improvements, which comprise phase one of the town centre redevelopment scheme, are due to begin in March.

Phase two, expected to start in January next year, will see much-needed alterations to the junction of Water Lane and Salisbury Road.

Highway bosses want to make the junction more pedestrian friendly by landscaping footpaths and reducing the width of roads.

Totton's makeover, due to be completed by May 2009, is expected to cost about £4m.

Council chiefs say it will help regenerate the town, lure more shoppers by reducing the impact of cars, and generally make Totton more attractive.
