A Southampton-based Russian cultural organisation say they are "very sad" at the situation in Ukraine, claiming it is going be much more difficult for Russians to study in the city.

The Daily Echo spoke to a Russian cultural organisation, Winchester Russian Circle, which operates in Southampton, Winchester and surrounding areas.

The former Chairman who asked not to be named, raised concern at the Russian natives heading over to study.

“I think Russian students will find it a lot more difficult to study here", he said, highlighting that language schools in Southampton will be missing out on Russian students.

On the war, he added:“This really is going to backfire very, very badly on Putin. This will turn the Russian community more against Putin. Russians regard Ukrainians as Slavic brothers which is why they’ve been so quick to come out and protest because they regard Putin as invading their own kin.

“It just makes me sad because Russia has so much going for it. It really is quite sad. Myself and a lot of other people in the group are very sad. The Russian civilians don’t want this, they really don’t.”

“I think Russian students will find it a lot more difficult to study here", he added, highlighting that language schools in Southampton will also be missing out on Russian students.

When asked about the support being provided to Ukranian and Russian students, University of Southampton and Solent University said that they were concerned and saddened by the situation in Ukraine and encouraged affected students to get in touch with the Student Hub.

Two of Southampton's MPs also spoke about rising number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war.

Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, said: "Regarding refugees fleeing Ukraine, sadly, as desperate Ukrainians flee war, the Home Office is still applying normal visa restrictions to everyone except those with immediate family in the UK, although I hope this changes in any new announcements today", whilst calling on the Government to open more safe routes.

Royston Smith, MP for Southampton Itchen, said: "The Government has been clear that it will assist with the humanitarian and refugee crisis that is happening in Ukraine. We are sending £200m and Visa rules are being relaxed", also highlighting how charities and businesses are sponsoring refugees to allow entry.
