A SOUTHAMPTON shopping hub are boycotting Russian goods, to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

Shop Local Southampton, an online network which allows local independent firms to advertise products, has banned any Russian goods from being promoted on its site.

It has also banned Belarusian products.

As reported, Russia launched the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine last Thursday, with the support of neighbouring Belarus.

Network owner Chris Zardis, said: "The reports coming from Ukraine are heartbreaking.

"In solidarity with Ukraine and the Ukrainian people, products made in the Russian Federation or Belarus may no longer be promoted on Shop Local Southampton.

He noted that the group's position "is not aimed at the local Russian community or their businesses", adding: "It must feel awful to see your country perpetrating this, you are an important part of our community, and you must be protected from discrimination."

Chris also called on Southampton City Council to prepare our city to welcome those who will sadly need refuge as a city of sanctuary.
