THE MOMENTUS effort to support Ukrainian refugees has continued in the city with a fundraiser amassing over £15,000.

City residents have contributed towards the Southampton Polish Social Club's massive efforts to aid those fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The club's JustGiving fundraiser launched two weeks ago and has already raised £15,123.

Donations flooded in following the launch of the fundraiser and more than £13,000 was raised in one day.

This comes as the club begins to move donations from its five warehouses across the city into the former Toys 'R' Us store at Western Esplanade, which has stood derelict since 2018.

As reported earlier this week, Packaged Living, the developers behind the £200m Maritime Gateway development which includes the Toys 'R' Us site, has agreed that the building can be used for the humanitarian effort.

Paulina Kozlowska of the Southampton Polish Club previously said "the whole of Southampton is mobilised" as people support those in need.

She said: "It restores your hope in humanity."

The money raised from the fundraiser is likely to be spent on transport costs if lorry companies are self-funded.

The club also hopes to purchase things like hospital tents, power generators and any big pieces of equipment that are required which are not being donated.
