A SOUTHAMPTON man is "desperate" to get his young daughter and ex-partner to the city after they fled Ukraine.

Sam Croucher says the wait for his ex-partner Alina Kiian's passport and UK visa is "agonising" - but they cannot leave the war-torn country behind without it.

The 34-year-old marine engineer managed to book Alina and his daughter Amelia Croucher, 2, into a hotel in Moldova, which is where they have been for nearly three weeks.

Now, Sam is doing all he can to ensure the pair, and Alina's mother Olena, arrive in the UK safely.

He said: "It's agonising but it’s a good job they are not in a city that is under siege.

"It’s very, very frustrating as no one gives any answers.

"If I knew how ineffective the system was going to be, we would have got them staying there for a day or two then get to another border.

"I’m ashamed and everyone who I have spoken to agrees. Why is the UK being so cruel and slow with these people fleeing war?

"I am quite lucky I managed to get them a hotel room in Moldova, but it costs 80 euros a day.

"The longer we wait for this passport, the longer it will take for them to get back.

"Plus, we’ve paid €1,600 so far for the hotel room and £2,000 for a priority visa service for Alina."

Mr Croucher added they "have not been given any time frame for Alina’s passport," and says he is shocked at the "inefficiency."

He said: "What’s the point in speaking to the helpline if they can’t help you?

"I am shocked at the inefficiency.

"I am desperate for them to get here as soon as possible. The plan is for them to live with me.

"Moldova isn’t a NATO country, so it’s an easy target for Putin.

"I want to raise awareness of the inefficiency in the system as I am sure I am not the only one who is affected."
