A MAJOR sport and fashion retailer looks destined to move into a flagship Southampton store that has been vacant for two years.

Topman and Topshop in Above Bar Street closed its shutters for the final time in February 2020.

The large unit, next to the main entrance of WestQuay, has been empty since.

But a planning application submitted to the city council suggests that JD will move into the shop.

The company is seeking permission to install an illuminated sign on the front of the building.

JD also occupies a unit at 68-70 Above Bar Street, but this is currently listed for rent on property website Realla.

An Echo reporter spoke with shoppers in the city.

Karen Stinson, 36, who lives in Portswood Road said: “I like JD and always have a look, but I don’t see why it needs to move into a bigger shop when it already has one and everyone knows about it.

“Maybe it’ll be one of the brand’s bigger, fancier shops that will draw people to the city? “I’ll definitely be popping my head in. Makes you wonder what will happen to the one up the road.

Student Oliver Reed, 21, said he often shops in JD.

“That is a huge unit,” he continued, “and I reckon they’ll get some serious stock in – trainers, I think.

“I’ll definitely be coming down and checking it out and probably spending money I know I shouldn’t be.

“I know that some people will probably be disappointed but most people my age will shop here, and I guess the other JD here will be sold on and make way for something new.”

The Echo has asked Go! Southampton for a comment and awaits a response.
