GREEN-fingered primary pupils from Southampton joined the Prime Minister to plant a tree at Downing Street.

Boris Johnson worked with Sholing Junior School children as part of The Queen’s Green Canopy.

The team planted an Amelanchier Grandiflora, known as a Robin Hill tree, and unveiled a QGC plaque which was produced by the Royal British Legion Industries.

Southampton Itchen MP Royston Smith said: “I have worked with children from Sholing Junior School on a number of projects.

“They are wonderfully polite, incredibly engaged and great company.

"Their trip to Number 10, to meet the Prime Minister, was a fitting reward to staff and pupils who go out of their way to put other people first.

“I was pleased to be able to play my part in arranging their visit and I am enormously proud of them all.”

Mr Smith said as part of the day the school's minibus was even allowed to park outside Number 10.

The tree will be added to the interactive QGC map, which will be presented to Her Majesty at the end of the Jubilee year.

“Trees are the lungs of the planet and an excellent partner in countering climate change.

“As well as making our country more beautiful, projects like these take us further towards our goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050, helping to secure a brighter, greener future for our young people.”

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.
