A NON-binary healthcare assistant has launched a fundraiser to pay for the surgery that will make them “so happy.”

Stef Extence from Southampton officially came out as transgender last summer.

Since coming out, they have been keen to undergo top surgery, a procedure to remove breast or chest tissue.

After being referred to a gender clinic, Stef learned that it could take years to have an initial NHS appointment regarding the surgery, with no guarantee of a referral.

This led Stef to take matters into their own hands.

The 26-year-old said: “This is so important for me for my day-to-day happiness.

“I am raising money for the surgery as I have wanted it for several years.

“A friend of mine did a fundraiser so I thought I would give it a go.

“For me, I know I want this as I wear a chest binder every day. Just thinking about the surgery makes me so happy and the thought is what’s pushing me to have it done.”

Stef is keen to feel comfortable in their own skin and hopes the fundraiser will help make their dreams a reality.

Stef said: “Four years ago was when I started to have the idea that this is something I want.

“The thought was still there a year later, so at that point, I started thinking about saving money.

“My partner bought me my first binder, and it confirmed how I felt. It was probably the main reason I wanted the surgery.”

The fundraiser was created at the beginning of April and has already raised £725 of its £4,000 target.

Stef said: “I’m travelling to Turkey for the operation as it is really expensive in the UK.

“The surgery costs £3,500 and the extra £500 will go towards travel costs and accommodation.

“I’m really surprised by the number of people who have donated.

“I expected my close friends and family to kick it off but quite a few friends have shared it on social media and people have donated.

“I have been really moved so far as I have raised a lot more than I thought I would.”
