BORIS Johnson and Rishi Sunak are to be fined for breaching Covid-19 regulations.

The news about the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer emerged this afternoon.

This follows allegations of lockdown parties in Downing Street and Whitehall.

According to Number 10, the fixed penalty notices relating to the PM's birthday party on June 19 2020.

By this date, 124 people had died from Covid in Southampton.

Alan Whitehead, MP for Southampton Test, said: "In light of this news I think that the Chancellor and the Prime Minister should resign."

Cllr Satvir Kaur, leader of the Labour group in Southampton, said: "“Speaking to local residents on the doorstep, understandably people are very upset and angry by the news.

"We have been badly let down by the Conservative Party.

"They broke the very rules they created, then lied to us about it, taking us all for fools.

"It’s clear the Tories are unfit to govern and those responsible should resign.”

It is understood Mr Johnson's wife, Carrie, will also be fined.

Cllr Keith House, leader of Eastleigh Borough Councillor, said "the party must now be over for Boris".

The Lib Dem told the Echo: "It’s time for him to stand down. He broke the same law he was supposed to be enforcing. Public trust has gone.

"Our MPs should force him out if he won’t do the decent thing.”

Coronavirus claimed the life of one person in Southampton on the same day as an alleged Downing Street Christmas party, with even more killed in the same week.

Figures from the UK coronavirus daily dashboard show several people were killed by Covid-19 in the same week as the alleged festive event, with two deaths occurring locally on the same date last year.

These occurred in Southampton and Eastleigh.

The data also showed that between December 12 and 18 last year, there were five deaths in the Test Valley, and one in the New Forest.

No deaths were recorded in Winchester.

However, 300 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospitals across the South East on December 18 – among over 1,600 throughout England.

The Metropolitan Police said at least 30 more fixed penalty notices will be issued by the ACRO Criminal Records Office.

This is up from the 20 referrals for fixed-penalty notices (FPN) the force said had been made at the end of March.

Posting on the Daily Echo's Facebook page, Eastleigh resident Steve Palmer explained how he had to shield due to having dilated cardiomyopathy and a compromised immune system.

The 57-year-old said: "Hacks me off while I was told to 'shield' and stay at home because I was deemed extremely clinically vulnerable, he was on the lash with his mates in his garden.

"I, like so many others, didn't see any friends for months. Let's not even mention those who lost loved ones and couldn't say goodbye to them.

"It's a disgrace, like they're rubbing our noses in it.

"So he gets a ridiculously small fine... whoopdie do. To him and his cronies it's nothing."

Conservative MP for New Forest West, Desmond Swayne, said he will not comment "until I have the PM’s own explanation".

Caroline Nokes, Tory MP for Southampton North and Romsey, was unavailable when contacted by the Echo.
