AN INJURED man at the centre of an attempted murder probe in Southampton was stabbed, police said.

Police have revealed the man who was found seriously injured in Above Bar Street on Sunday suffered serious stab wounds to his abdomen and hand. 

The 21-year-old from London was discovered at around 4 am and taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

His injuries are no longer thought to be life-threatening though.

But now officers have said he will be interviewed under caution as part of their enquiries.

A police cordon was put in place across the road and parts of East Park and three people were arrested. 

A 19-year-old man from Fareham who also suffered a stab wound has been discharged from hospital and is now in police custody. 

He is being questioned by officers on suspicion of attempted murder.

A 21-year-old man from Southampton was also arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

He had also suffered stab wounds and had been treated at hospital before being questioned in police custody.

He has since been released under investigation. 

A 17-year-old boy from Winchester was also arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and attempted murder.

Leading the investigation, Detective Inspector Rich Aston said: “Officers investigating the incident continue to review CCTV and are carrying out extensive enquiries in the area and with potential witnesses to understand the exact circumstances of how these men came to be injured on Sunday.  

“We continue to have increased patrols in the area and we would ask anyone with information about the incident to come forward if they have not already made contact us.

The police cordon was put in place until around 1 pm on Sunday and stretched from Above Bar Street's junction with Commercial Road, to it's junction with Cumberland Place. 

A large area of East Park was also cordoned off but police later said the incident took place in the street.
