ARMED police were called to a Hampshire neighbourhood after it was alleged a man was threatened with a gun.

Waterside Police have reported that officers were called to reports of a disturbance outside an address on Cosworth Drive in Hythe at around 7.55pm.

It has been alleged that a man was verbally abused and threatened with a gun after an altercation occurred between two people in the street.

Another man was seen to enter a vehicle in an attempt to flee the scene, before attempting to drive the vehicle at the man, but he had managed to get out of the way of the oncoming car, it has been reported.

Armed police and the National Police Air Service searched the area and were able to locate the vehicle and driver at an address on The Marsh in Hythe.

A 38-year-old man from Hythe was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a Class B drug.

He remains in custody at this time.

A spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "Officers will be continuing to carry out enquiries in the local area today, so you may see an increased police presence while they seek to establish the exact circumstances of this incident.

"A number of high-visibility patrols will continue in the area over the coming days. If residents have any concerns or issues they would like to raise with officers, please do stop them and engage with them."
