A SOUTHAMPTON party leader has called on MPs to "demand" the Prime Minister's resignation after his 'partygate' apology today.

This afternoon, Boris Johnson addressed the House of Commons and offered the British people a "full apology".

It comes after he was fined by the Met Police for attending a birthday party thrown for him during England's first lockdown.

He said: “I paid the fine immediately and I offered the British people a full apology, and I take this opportunity on the first available sitting day to repeat my wholehearted apology to the House.”

He then told MPs he did not "knowingly" break the rules at the 2020 birthday party at No. 10, and urged MPs to focus on the Ukrainian crisis.

Now, Southampton Labour leader Satvir Kaur has called on MPs to demand his resignation.

She told the Daily Echo: "So many people in Southampton made sacrifices during the pandemic, including not even holding the hand of a loved one when they died.

"We all followed the rules when those that made the rules partied, then lied to us about it, taking us all for fools.

"Those that once voted Conservative said they can never again, as all trust has now been broken. It's clear the Conservatives are not fit to govern.

"It's time for the Prime Minister and Tory MPs supporting him to start taking this seriously and demand a resignation."

Labour MP for Southampton Test, Alan Whitehead, added: "I think that Boris Johnson should resign, he broke the laws he put in place to keep people safe over the pandemic and he has lost the public's trust."

Conservative MP for Southampton Itchen, Royston Smith, said: "The Prime Minister has apologised to the House and to the country.

"He has clarified that he was moving from one meeting to another and believed stopping with work colleagues for a few minutes to receive birthday greetings did not break the rules.

"I have accepted, at face value, his explanation and his apology.”

The Daily Echo has contacted Conservative MPs Caroline Nokes and Paul Holmes for a comment and is waiting for a response.
