AN ANALYSIS of each Southampton MPs’ Twitter accounts has revealed how often they use the social media platform.

Labour politician Dr Alan Whitehead, who represents the Test constituency, tweets far less than Tory MPs Royston Smith and Caroline Nokes.

The 71-year-old has sent around 1,800 posts between first joining the website on October 1 2011 and March 29 this year.

It means he sends an average of less than one tweet per day – putting out just 14 per month.

The average MP that has an account sends 3.5 tweets per day, but around one in 10 representatives did not have one at the time the research was done.

Mr Smith, of the Itchen constituency, had sent around 8,900 tweets between first joining the website on September 1 2009 and March 29 this year.

It means the 57-year-old sends an average of around 2 tweets per day – equating to 59 per month.

However, Mr Smith has had this account since before he was elected to the seat – on May 7 2015.

Caroline Nokes was the most prolific ‘tweeter’ out of the three.

The Romsey and Southampton North MP had sent around 10,900 tweets between first joining the website on October 1 2010 and March 29 this year.

It means the 49-year-old sends an average of around 2.6 tweets per day – equating to 79 per month.

This account was created after Ms Nokes was elected to her seat – on May 6 2010.

Labour MP Karl Turner is the most prolific Tweeter – sending an average of 26.1 per day for 12 years.

The roughly 600 MPs with accounts had sent almost 8 million tweets between them by the end of March.
