Now, images have shown a building completely destroyed by the inferno which sparked an emergency response from five stations and around 30 firefighters.

Cylinders had to be removed from a shed to make the area safe after the inferno started at around 5.45 pm.

The incident is believed to have been caused after a bonfire spread to a series of outbuildings.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told residents to keep windows and doors shut due to the amount of smoke in the area at the time.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews from Hightown, St Mary’s, Eastleigh, Botley and Portchester are on the scene of a garden fire on Somerton Avenue.

"Control room operators received multiple calls at 17:46 after a bonfire spread to a series of outbuildings causing a large smoke plume over the Harefield area of Southampton.

"Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have been tackling the fire using jets and hose reels as they also worked to remove a number of cylinders from the blaze before they were made safe."
