VIDEO footage has shown motorists moving cones and driving through crowds of runners at Southampton marathon.

The footage taken on Sunday shows the BMW driver pulling up to the roundabout on the B3038 from the closed Chapel Road during the race.

Runners can then be seen running around the vehicle which was closely followed by a blue Nissan Micra.

Pulling out onto the roundabout, the vehicle then turned left, heading towards St Mary's whilst onlookers filmed the incident.

One witness told the Echo that the problem was "particularly bad" on the day with drivers "moving the cones and driving along the marathon".

"The man in the BMW got out and moved the traffic cones during one of the most busiest parts of the marathon and then drove through even though the marshals had said no and then the blue Micra followed.

"We saw about six cars doing it but the BMW guy was the worst moving the cones. A lot of the cars were getting very dirty looks from the marathon runners and getting in the way of the marathon obviously.

"All of the stewards were getting annoyed with the cars that kept coming down but wasn't much they could do."

Race director of the ABP Southampton Marathon, Chris Rees said after the marathon: "We appreciate that not everyone is involved in the event, in the city. We work hard to put out diversions to ensure a smooth flow around the city.

"We have changed this route to open up Thomas Lewis Way, The Avenue is all open and the M271 access to the docks is also all clear.

"Our marshals allow motorists across the point where it’s safe and we appreciate all the residents' help and assistance with this."

The marathon began at 9am on Sunday, with over 8,000 people taking part and more than 30 road closures across the city.

Most roads had reopened by about 3pm.
