A COUNCIL leader has hit back after the authority was criticised in the House of Commons for its predicted future debts.

Conservative MP for Eastleigh Paul Holmes spoke in the House of Commons to criticise the Lib Dem-run borough council.

Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, Mr Holmes said by 2025 "Eastleigh Borough Council will have a debt of £650m".

He went on to say this will mean an average debt of £6,300 for every resident in Eastleigh if this is the case.

But the leader of the council, Cllr Keith House, hit back saying "there's nothing new here from Paul Holmes. He has nothing to say he has not said before".

In the Commons Mr Holmes said: "Does the Prime Minister think that it is acceptable for this council to become a speculative property developer, and what advice would you give to my constituents next week to put a stop to this casino council and its profligate ways?"

In reply Boris Johnson said: "My honourable friend is completely right about Eastleigh Borough Council and the debts they have run up and I can't even see the leader of the Liberal Democrats in his place.

"He's not even delivering value for money for his own constituents Mr Speaker."

The jibe was followed by jeers from the Conservative benches who proceeded to points across the room to Liberal Democrat MPs.

But speaking to the Echo after the comments, Cllr House added: "The council’s auditors give Eastleigh a clean bill of health.

"Our investments have created jobs, saved services and kept our part of the council tax down for 19 years running.

"The Conservatives would just cut services and hike up taxes just as they have at Hampshire. It’s no wonder residents keep supporting the local Lib Dems."
