WOMEN in Southampton are earning 19 per cent less than men, data suggests.

According to new research, for every £1 men in Southampton earn, women only get 81p.

The average salary for men in the city is £36,107, compared to £29,253 for women - a difference of £6,854.

Tax calculator income-tax.co.uk used the latest data available from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to analyse the differences in median annual pay for male and female full-time workers in 321 districts and units across the UK.

East Hampshire is the only place in the county that pays women more than men.

Data showed that women working full-time there earn an average £4,086 more than males.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is Gosport – by far the worst offender in Hampshire.

If the average Gosport man earns £39,237 a year, women here get a third less, earning only £25,797.

Portsmouth also pays women a fifth less than men. On average, women here earn nearly £7,000 less than men.

A spokesperson at income-tax.co.uk said: "Our research suggests that some of the fairest employers are not necessarily the richest. Quite the opposite, in fact – districts across the country with high-paying jobs in general tend to pay women much less. Hampshire is no exception.

“The difference in wages for males and females in Gosport and Hart is quite remarkable. Considering they pay men between £39k and £46k a year, it is surprising that employers in Gosport and Hart offer women working there around £14k less.

"Gosport is actually the UK’s seventh worst place for women in terms of gender pay inequality."
