A RETIRED couple have sold more than 250 tickets for a Platinum Jubilee street party.

Peter and Rosemary Badham - better known as Pete and Rosie - will be putting on the celebration after organising the Golden and Diamond parties.

The street party will take place in Archery Grove, Woolston, where the retired teachers have lived together for 42 years.

Rosie, 74, said: “We’ve been part of the organising committee since 2002 for the Golden Jubilee, and then the Diamond in 2012, and now this, so 20 years.

“We sell tickets to cover the costs of the events, but any profit goes to a chosen charity.

“We’ve sold 250 tickets, and we know of at least 60 children, so I think it’s quite likely that it’ll be more [than last time].

“I think the Queen’s done a remarkable job, 70 years is a very long time.

"We both remember going to the Coronation, I was five and Pete was four.

"I remember sitting in the street at the street party. I think we’d like our grandchildren to have that memory.”

The pair will hope to match the efforts of the Diamond Jubilee, with Pete saying they had to “take out public liability insurance” because “they had over 300 people there”.

“It was the largest street party in Southampton, we had between 350 and 400 people here,” said Rosie.

“Last time we donated to Simon Says, one of our fellow organisers worked for Barclays so they matched our donation, meaning we raised £1,100 for charity.

“We live near Mayfield Nurseries, who work with Mind Solent, so this year we decided to choose them as our charity. We felt good to support something local whilst enjoying ourselves.”

Peter, 73, added: "People are very supportive of [the charity being local]. When we went round selling tickets they were saying it’s lovely to have a charity that’s just up the road.

"Lots of people have donated cash, there’s a lady up the road that can’t come so she donated £40."

However, Rosie believes this time around the event is more of a celebration than a fundraiser, particularly after Covid-19.

“People said back at that time [of lockdown], when this is all over shall we all have a street party to celebrate it, but it so happens that it’s perfect timing! So, it’s a double celebration really.”

Peter added: “We’re not particularly royalist, it was more something to get the neighbours together and [for] community spirit.”
