POLICE including armed officers rushed to a field in Southampton as travellers attempted to gain access.

The force and council responded to the convoy of caravans in Test Lane, Redbridge yesterday.

Ward councillor, Sally Spicer was cooking dinner when she was alerted to the unfolding incident.

After a call from a concerned resident, Cllr Spicer contacted police who sent officers including an armed response.

Highways contractor, Balfour Beatty is due to bring in physical barriers to secure the site.

The scene is currently being monitored whilst measures are put in.

Sharing the news on Facebook, Cllr Spicer said: “I was cooking the kids dinner when I had a call from a resident alerting me to what was happening.

“The end result of the council working together and lots of different calls that I made back and forth at the scene, the site they were trying to access will now be secured.

“No doubt the travellers will stay a few days due to them probably attending the Wickham fair.”

Hampshire Constabulary has been approached for comment.
