PLANS to create 1,000 new parking spaces in Southampton are set to go ahead, though some proposals will now be up for review.

At a meeting of full council on Wednesday, the new leader of the council, Cllr Satvir Kaur, confirmed the scheme would continue under the new administration.

Brought in by the Conservatives after winning control of the council last year, the plans would bring new spaces in residential areas in the hope to free up pavements and grass verges currently being churned up as a result of people parking on them.

Questioning the leader, Tory deputy leader, Cllr Jeremy Moulton asked the administration to commit to delivering the spaces and maintain the full budget for the scheme.

Cllr Kaur replied: “The programme is currently continuing but it is subject to review.

“We are keen to work with local residents to pursue extra spaces based on proper consultation to ensure that the distribution is based on need rather than just politics.

“If there’s a shovel in the ground we’ll obviously complete that plan, everything else is up for review.”

Work on the scheme started in March.

The spaces, set to be provided by spring 2023, should be a mix of formal car parks, parking bays and converted road verges.

They would be added to sites already identified by the council.

Under the Conservative administration, spots were planned for:

  • Bassett
  • Bevois
  • Bitterne (where schemes are already underway in Lydgate Road and Farringford Road)
  • Coxford
  • Harefield
  • Millbrook
  • Redbridge
  • Shirley
  • Sholing
  • Swaythling
  • Woolston
