UPSET residents plagued by dumped supermarket trolleys have said: “People just don’t care about council house estates.”

Shopping trolleys from several supermarkets have been dumped across Shirley and Lordshill for months, residents told the Echo.

Residents say that new trolleys appear weekly causing a pile up.

The hotspots include Redbridge Towers, Binsley Close, Severn Road, and Northolt Gardens.

Cllr David Furnell, ward member for Millbrook, said he found 14 shopping trollies alone at in a recent walk around the area.

A resident of Northolt Gardens estate in Lordshill, who did not want to be named, told the Daily Echo there is “no chance” of the trolleys dumped there being removed quickly.

The person said: “It’s a bit of a game for how many will appear by the weekend.

"There’s now 12 and at least one a week is added. We’ve tried to get it sorted out, but people just don’t care about council houses.”

The trolleys dumped in car parks, green spaces, and along paths have caused residents to feel “saddened” by the eyesore dumping.

“It's dangerous," said a Severn Road resident. "Sometimes I drive out and the wind blows the trolleys into the road, and it’s always been a hazard."

And some trolleys abandoned behind the Bricklayers Arms pub were left for months, according to those living in the area.

Southampton City Council classifies abandoned shopping trolleys as fly-tipping but the council's said it contacts supermarkets rather than clearing them up.

Anyone who spots a trolley is encouraged to report it via the TrolleyWise app.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We work hard to ensure that trolleys remain at our stores for our customers to use.

"When they are removed, we work closely with TrolleyWise to collect any abandoned trolleys and return them to our stores.”

More than a million trolleys are stolen and abandoned each year at a cost of around £35m to businesses.
