CAMPAIGNERS are fighting plans to build up to 150 homes on a large greenfield site overlooking Southampton Water.

Objectors say the proposed development at Corks Farm, Marchwood, would create extra traffic problems as well as placing additional strain on schools and health facilities.

The 8.91-hectare site bordering Normandy Way and Admiralty Way is on the route to Marchwood Industrial Park and Marchwood Military Port.

Villagers are already concerned about the large number of vehicles using roads in the area and fear the situation will only grow worse if the Corks Farm scheme is approved.

The scheme has so far sparked more than 30 objections, including one from David Rouse, of Portside Close.

His letter to New Forest District Council says: "We do not have the infrastructure to support more homes and vehicles in our village. The schools are already running at capacity and there is limited access to the doctors' surgery.

"Marchwood can't cope with more than what's already happening."

Fellow objector Karen Smith, of Admiralty Way, adds: "The current infrastructure in Marchwood is already beyond capacity, with roads unable to cope with the current traffic volumes.

"Another 150 homes, and the associated cars and people, would destroy a village that is already struggling."

The application, submitted by Oceanic Galaxy, says the scheme will help meet the need for more housing in the district.

It adds: "Our modest, sensible and pragmatic approach to the design demonstrates how 150 dwellings could be achieved successfully on the site and how they could be located with an excellent relationship to the existing settlement and its wide range of facilities."

The application says roads and roundabouts in the area "are all expected to operate well under capacity".

It adds: "The transport assessment has demonstrated that the proposals are not considered to have a significant impact on the local road network in terms of safety or capacity."

Oceanic Galaxy's proposal to build 150 homes at Corks Farm, along with industrial units at the other end of the site, was first unveiled last year.

The outline application currently being studied by the council relates only to a proposed new access to the land earmarked for housing.
