A VARIETY of celebrations will take place across Southampton and Eastleigh next week for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The countdown is on ahead of the four-day weekend between Thursday, June 2, and Sunday, June 5, as people string up their bunting and bake sweet treats to celebrate.

From street parties to big events, here’s everything you need to know about what’s happening in the area.

Street parties

In Southampton alone, there are a total of 60 road closures spread over the Jubilee weekend as a number of street parties are set to take place.

And in the Eastleigh Borough Council area there will be over 30 road closures across the weekend.

Events for children

  • At the Totton and Eling Community Centre on Thursday, June 2 a special children-only Jubilee party is taking place from 3pm to 5pm.

There is lots of fun to be had for those aged 0-9-years.

People must call 02380 8731 to reserve their place for the event.

  • For those looking for the royal treatment, Little Lovelies Children's Pamper Sessions in the Mercantile Flea is offering a special Jubilee pamper across the special weekend.

Youngsters will be treated like royalty and get glammed up for all the celebrations.

There will be lots of glitter, Union Jack tinsel hair, face glitter and nail painting.

Family events

  • Join Hampshire County Council at Royal Victoria Country Park on Sunday, June 5 or a Big Jubilee Picnic Lunch.

Pack a picnic and venture to the country park from 11am to 4pm for a fun-filled family afternoon with entertainment.

  • The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Community Showcase in Eastleigh on Saturday, June 4, will bring together local organisations and residents to mark the historic occasion.

A day of colour and music is guaranteed for the town centre on this day from 10am until 4pm.

The Community Showcase, on Leigh Road Recreation Ground, will be filled with community celebration and fun with homemade cakes, choirs and live music, a photo booth, arts and crafts and much more.

There will be bunting-making to decorate the bandstand and a day-long concert by Community Choirs on the bandstand, culminating in a Last Night of the Proms

  • Organised by Unity 101 Community Radio, the Big Platinum Festival in Mayflower Park will boast a variety of performances, stalls and activities to celebrate the Queen's 70-year reign.

The festival will run from 10am to 9pm on June 5 and visitors will be treated to a variety of entertainment and activities on the day.

A grand funfair will be at the event, along with new car displays, football workshops, a children's zone and circus performances.

On top of that, there will be a DJ demonstration, a Chinese dragon dancers procession, TV and radio studios, an appearance from the Southampton Music Hub.

  • On June 2 at 11am Friends of St James’ Park will be hosting a fun, family-friendly community picnic to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee.

Bring your picnic, find a spot and soak up the atmosphere at this fun and relaxed event in St James’ Park.

Attendees can expect a cake stall, crown making craft, tombola, a Jubilee themed trail, a fancy dress competition and much more.

  • Join Monty’s Community Hub on June 3 to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne at their street fete.

People can enjoy a barbecue, bingo, bouncy castles, a photobooth and more, including an appearance from Trigger the Train.

  • The Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday, June 5 is a chance for neighbours and communities to celebrate their connections and get to know one another a little better at various locations. 

Whether it’s sharing a cuppa with a neighbour on the doorstep or a bigger bash in the street, join millions of people across the UK to share friendship, food and fun with The Big Jubilee Lunch.

Beacon lighting

  • A popular form of celebration, beacon lighting will take place at Knowle Park in Fair Oak on June 2.

Meeting at the Trig Point, the lighting will take place from 8.30pm to 9.45pmn.

Fair Oak and Horton Heath Council is encouraging people to “join in with the rest of the nation and Commonwealth” as they celebrate with the traditional lighting of the beacon.

  • At 9.45pm on June 2 a beacon will be lit at the Queen’s Peace Fountain in East Park, simultaneously with other Beacons being lit at 9.45pm throughout the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Overseas territories.
