A SOUTHAMPTON bridge was partially closed this morning amid fears for the welfare of a man seen in the area.

The Northam Bridge was shut outbound and drivers were advised to find an alternative route, but the road has now reopened.

A police spokesman said: "Police were called at 5.56am to reports of a concern for welfare of a man on Northam Bridge.

"The road was closed while emergency services attended.

"The road was re-opened at around 8am and the man was taken to hospital."

Earlier Southampton Travel tweeted: "Northam Bridge: Bridge currently closed outbound due to an incident. Closure is from the Union Road/ Princes Street junction.

"Emergency Services attending. Please find alternative route."

City Red tweeted: "Due to an incident on Northam Bridge outbound, we are diverting via Itchen Bridge. We are unable to serve all stops along Bitterne Road West from Northam to Bitterne."

Bluestar added: "Diversions are in place on the 16 & 18 because of police activity. Northam Bridge closed outboard at the moment.

"We can't serve any bus stops from Northam Bridge to Bitterne shops. Sorry for any inconvenience."
