Residents in Totton have come together to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

On the final day of celebrations, residents of Singleton Way filled their street with food, drinks and laughter.

Sitting at a decorated table which stretched most of the street, neighbours tucked into specially baked jubilee cakes and sausage rolls.

David and Margaret Caplehorn have lived on the street for the past 23 years.

David, 74, told the Echo how he remembers the Queen’s coronation, which he watched at the cinema in Totton.

He said: “Both Margaret and I saw the coronation. I was five years old. We had a party like this at the back of our house.

“She has always been our Queen. We’ve always had respect for [the Royals].”

He went on to say how living in the area is “fantastic” as “we all get on”.

“We had a street party for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. We have had parties down here during the lockdowns with what we could do all in our own gardens.

“We have great neighbours. Any excuse for a get together.”

Margaret, 73, added: “It’s wonderful. Really lovely. Everyone provided their own food and brought extra to share. We all like to get together. We always do something. It doesn’t matter if it’s rain or shine we love being all together.”

Other attendees said Jo-Anne Stubbington was “the star of the show” having sent out the invitations and helped organise the day.

Jo, 48, said: “It’s been a team effort. It’s taken about three weeks to organise. We sent out an invitation that was in the shape of the Union Jack with a straw with red and white stripes so it didn’t look like another flyer.”
